As preparations continue for the relaunch of Virgin Radio in the UK, the station now has a Head Of Music in the form of Richard Wilkinson, previously music chief at Scottish station Beat 106 and Head Of Programming for Forth One in Edinburgh.

As previously reported, TalkSport owner UTV Media is relaunching Virgin Radio – in partnership with the Virgin Group – as part of the second national digital radio network that is finally going live this year. Somewhat ironically, UTV is working with Bauer Media on launching that DAB network, and Bauer owns Absolute, which began its life as the original Virgin Radio.

The all-new Virgin Radio UK is set to launch in March. Among other previous roles, Wilkinson has worked as a consultant on Virgin-branded radio stations elsewhere in the world since 2003, including in Thailand, Indonesia and Lebanon.

On his new gig, he says: “I am tremendously excited to be part of the team – the brand has an incredible heritage that people absolutely love, so it’s an honour to be asked to put together the station’s playlist. Having worked with the Virgin brand for over thirteen years, I can’t wait to bring it back to the UK”.

Confirming the hire, Virgin Radio Programme Director Liam Thompson adds: “Richard has a wealth of experience and depth of music knowledge, which makes him the perfect person to develop a unique music policy for Virgin Radio. It’s great to have him on board as we look to the station’s launch this March”.
