Adele told the audience at a show in LA on Saturday that she had turned down the opportunity to play next year’s Super Bowl half-time show. The event’s organisers responded by claiming to have never even offered it to her.

Rumours that Adele would sing in the middle of the sporting event next year have been doing the rounds for a while. Because obviously Adele would be approached to do it at a point when she is actively doing stuff. It would be silly not to. Although that speculation was stoked earlier this month by an article in The Sun, which quoted “an NFL source” as saying that “organisers are doing absolutely everything they can to try to persuade her to sign up” but it was her “nerves that are the issue”.

Addressing those rumours at the Staples Center, Adele said: “First of all, I’m not doing the Super Bowl. I mean, come on, that show is not about music. And … I can’t dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no”.

In response, the NFL and its sponsor Pepsi put out a joint statement, saying: “The NFL and Pepsi are big fans of Adele. We have had conversations with several artists about the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. However, we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else. We are focused on putting together a fantastic show for Houston and we look forward to revealing that in good time”.

Formal offer or not, if you talk to an artist about doing it then they say they don’t want to, I’m pretty sure that still counts as the artist turning it down. Whatever, she’s not doing it.
