Single Review: A-Skillz – Happiness (Finger Lickin Records)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 8 December 2008
Another collaboration with Krafty Kuts, ‘Happiness’ sets all out to inspire that very feeling in its lucky listeners with exuberant and excited loops and beats that turn this track into an instant dancefloor classic. Sparks of upbeat jazz and incendiary funk conspire to illuminate the effortless raps making this one of the real joys of the British hip-hop scene. It may not have the “deep lyrics” its chorus insists we never forget, but it certainly has those “catchy hooks”, making it a bit like a more hip-hop orientated Go! Team. ‘Got The Rhythm’ on the b-side is also a pretty good interpretation of the title, with James Brown shouts and woops creating a fire-eyed soul that burns in the memory. Rhythm and happiness – the perfect partners. TM
