Eddy Says: A bonus Eddy Says from holiday

Yes, I know I said last week that I wouldn’t be writing one of these for a couple of weeks, but I just can’t stop myself. As I write, I can see frigate birds and pelicans swooping and diving on fish, there’s a dawn chorus of cockerels, dogs and myriad spectacularly coloured birds.

This year I compiled my usual ‘festive fifty or sixty’ list of artists and tracks I especially liked in the previous 12 months, but then forgot to hone it down so to dish out my traditional virtual awards that recognise the hard work or just sheer awesomeness of some of the artists who particuarly delivered the goods. So I’m going to do that right now. From afar. Even though the long list is at home! So, here we go, separating wheat from chaff on holiday, from memory.

Remixer Of The Year 2009: Jack Beats
Remix-champions first and foremost, Beni and Niall delivered mix after mix, keeping the quality level so high that not even Skream could match it. They churned out so many great little mixes, with their irresistible trademark bounce, wow, and wobble, that they surely deserve to be in that esteemed club, along with Jagz Koner, Paul Epworth, Alex Metric and The Shoes.

Remix Of The Year 2009: La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix)
Brave, intelligent, genre-defining, Ollie’s mix ticked every box and will be looked back as the ‘Professional Widow’ of its time.

Song Of The Year 2009: Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
An honourable mention must go to Evil Nine, for exposing the marvellousness of this song.

Live Gig Of The Year 2009: Florence And The Machine at Glastonbury
She charmed and dazzled the packed tent with her amazing brand of power pop, and she managed to pirouette in six inch heels, while maintaining her elegance and poise at all times. That deserves and award in itself.

Club Gig Of The Year 2009: Mixhell at Remix All-nighter at Matter
Iggor and Laima Cavallera were a revelation, they worked the crowd into a frenzy with their booming beats and sheer enthusiasm.

Album Of The Year (UK) 2009: Calvin Harris – Ready For The Weekend
I was confident enough to predict this is September, and wrote enough about it then to excuse no more than a sentence here.

Album Of The Year (International) 2009: Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream
Both this debut and Calvin’s brilliant sophomore number contained extraordinary songwriting and production. Just get them and unashamedly love and cuddle them. They will pay back all your affection with dividends, I promise.

Country Of The Year: Australia
Empire Of The Sun, Temper Trap, Passion Pit – Oz was on fire in 2009, just unstoppable. So much so I had to invent this random category this year especially for them. And everybody is moving there, “pending government approval”, I hear. Soon Britain will be a huge ghost town, with tumbleweeds and the odd church bell. Which is just as well if the next government is a Conservative one.

That’s all I can think of right now, sorry if I missed something.

Big love,
eddy X
